Sweet Bonanza is the slot that put scatter pays on the map. Pragmatic Play released it in June 2019, and its candy-coloured 6×5 grid, tumbling reels and multiplier bombs became the template for a whole generation of slots, including Pragmatic’s own Gates of Olympus and Sugar Rush.

How Sweet Bonanza plays

There are no paylines. Eight or more matching symbols anywhere on the 6×5 grid pay a win. Winning symbols explode, new ones tumble in from above, and the sequence continues until no new win forms, so one spin can chain several payouts.

Fruit symbols pay least and the candies pay most, with the red heart candy at the top of the paytable. With 12 or more of a symbol, the heart pays 50x the stake before any multiplier.

Free spins and multiplier bombs

Four or more lollipop scatters trigger 10 free spins, and land three more during the bonus for another five. The bonus is where the game’s ceiling lives: rainbow bomb symbols carry multipliers from 2x to 100x. When the tumbling sequence ends, every bomb on the screen is added together and applied to the total win for that spin.

Unlike Gates of Olympus, the multipliers don’t build into a running total across the bonus. Each spin’s bombs count only for that spin, so big wins need several bombs landing on the same tumble.

Ante bet and bonus buy

An optional ante bet raises your stake by 25% and roughly doubles the chance of triggering free spins. Where it’s allowed, you can also buy the bonus directly for 100x the stake. Neither is available in every market. Bonus buys are banned in the UK, for example.

Max win and RTP

The maximum win is 21,175x the stake, far higher than the original Gates of Olympus. The default RTP is 96.49%, but as with most Pragmatic games, casinos can run lower-RTP versions, so check the game’s information screen before playing for real money. Thinking of real-money play? Who it suits

Sweet Bonanza is a good first slot for players new to scatter pays. The rules are simple, the base game ticks over with frequent small wins, and the bonus carries real upside. If you like the format but want the multipliers to stack across the whole bonus, try Gates of Olympus. For a faster take on the same theme, Sweet Bonanza POP shrinks the grid to 3×5 and adds instant jackpots.
