Is Raul Bautista a third playable character in GTA 6? Almost certainly not. Rockstar has only ever named two protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, and the August 2026 Extended Look presented Raul as the bank robber who takes them under his wing, not as someone you control.
The theory took off in September 2025, when a Reddit post argued that Raul was getting far more promotional attention than a normal side character. A year on, with the game weeks from release, here is where it stands.
Why fans thought Raul could be playable
- Solo screenshots. Raul is one of the few characters shown alone in official screenshots, without Jason or Lucia in the frame.
- His placement on Rockstar’s site. Fans noticed his character image sits on the opposite side of the page to everyone else’s.
- A different outfit every time. Some read his changing clothes as a sign of a customisable, player-controlled character.
- Rockstar’s track record. Red Dead Redemption 2 handed control to John Marston after Arthur Morgan’s story ended, and GTA 5 had three protagonists. A late-game switch would not be out of character for the studio.
What the Extended Look showed
Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, which premiered on Netflix on August 27, 2026, gave Raul his biggest screen time yet. In it he recruits Jason and Lucia for a heist, runs the job, and pays them off at the end as if it is the start of a working relationship. That fits Rockstar’s official description of him: an experienced bank robber looking for new crew members, whose risk-taking grows with every score.
Nothing in the footage showed Raul being controlled by the player, and Rockstar’s marketing has continued to build everything around Jason and Lucia. The Ultimate Edition content, for example, is described as unlocking across their story, with no mention of anyone else.
So is the theory dead?
As a “third protagonist from the start” idea, yes. The more interesting version that is still alive is about Raul’s role in the story. A reckless mentor whose jobs keep getting riskier is a classic set-up for a betrayal, and plenty of players expect him to end up as an obstacle or even the main antagonist rather than a lasting ally. A brief playable section late in the story is also not impossible, given Rockstar’s history, but nothing confirms it.
