It’s been a wild ride for Helldivers 2 this year, but nothing quite matches the explosion of activity that hit this past weekend. Following its long-awaited release on Xbox Series X/S, the co-op shooter has experienced a massive surge in player count, numbers the game hasn’t seen since its blockbuster launch in early 2024.

The Xbox launch on August 26 breathed new life into Helldivers 2, sending its active player count through the roof. According to a report from a Reddit user, the concurrent player count skyrocketed from 146,000 to 390,000 in just seven minutes. That’s not a typo: nearly triple the players, all flooding the servers in record time.
What sparked the surge?
The sudden spike isn’t entirely surprising, especially when you consider what dropped alongside the Xbox version. Arrowhead Studios went big by timing the console release with the debut of the Helldivers 2 x Halo: ODST Legendary Warbond, a crossover event that had fans buzzing for weeks in advance.
This collaboration brings armour sets, capes, vehicle skins, and weapons styled after the iconic Halo ODST look. Everything from gritty space marine aesthetics to lore-rich firepower is bundled into this Warbond, making it a must-buy for fans of both franchises. Unlocking the entire Legendary Warbond will run you 1,500 Super Credits, a premium cost that Arrowhead’s CEO has confirmed is reserved for crossover IP content.
Steam slimbing again
While much of the buzz is centred around the Xbox influx, Steam’s player numbers have also surged. The platform notched 165,000 concurrent players, marking its highest total since Helldivers 2’s initial launch window. That’s quite the comeback, especially after the PSN account controversy earlier this year nearly derailed the game’s momentum.
Originally launched in February 2024 as a PS5 and PC exclusive, Sony’s unexpected decision to open the gates for an Xbox release marked a historic moment: possibly the first of its kind where one of the PlayStation brand’s recent exclusives jumped ship in this generation’s console war.
What’s coming next: More Warbonds, more hordes
Just when you thought the hype train might slow down, Arrowhead has even more content locked and loaded for the weeks ahead. First up is the Into the Unjust update, scheduled to drop on September 2. This patch will bring fearsome new Terminid enemy variants as well as the ominous new Hive Worlds maps, setting the stage for even tougher battles against the galaxy’s vilest insectoids.
Not even two days later, the Dust Devils Premium Warbond will roll out on September 4. Expect new weapons, stratagems, armour sets, and capes, the kinds of additions that hardcore Helldivers live for. Between this update cadence and the evident return of community enthusiasm, it’s clear Arrowhead intends to keep the momentum rolling with renewed intensity.
The redemption arc is real
Earlier in the year, things were looking shaky for Helldivers 2. A controversial move by Sony to mandate the use of PSN accounts on PC almost torpedoed the game’s standing within the community. Massive backlash followed, and although the policy was later reversed, the damage to goodwill left a mark.

But since then, the devs have hustled hard with regular patches, seasonal events, and now this game-changing Xbox release. Whether you’re a freshly enlisted Helldiver or a seasoned veteran returning for another tour, the battlefield is buzzing again, and with good reason.
With October looming and even more updates likely on the way, the new console invasion could be just the beginning of a comprehensive second wind for Helldivers 2’s intergalactic war effort.
