Things have been relatively quiet in the Starfield galaxy lately, but a new report might have just set coordinates for our next big update. According to gaming outlet MP1st, Bethesda’s space-faring RPG could finally touch down on PlayStation 5 in Spring 2026, with a second expansion launching in tandem.

Spring 2026 is the new frontier for Starfield on PS5
Based on sources close to MP1st, Starfield isn’t expected to deploy any major new content or ports in 2025. In fact, Microsoft is supposedly holding back the PS5 version — and Expansion 2 — until sometime between March and June 2026.
Why the delay? The report suggests it’s tied in part to the relatively lukewarm sales of Shattered Space, the game’s first expansion. That may have compelled Microsoft and Bethesda to rethink their release windows and coordinate a heavier content drop next time around.
“According to our sources,” MP1st writes, “Starfield won’t be released in 2025, partly due to the RPG’s weak sales of the first expansion, Shattered Space. Instead, Microsoft is leaning toward releasing the Starfield PS5 version in Spring 2026.”
As part of this new plan, the rumoured PS5 version would arrive at the same time as Expansion 2, as well as a slate of quality-of-life updates. That suggests a coordinated relaunch effort designed to reignite interest across multiple platforms.
No shadow drop, but an announcement could be near
If you’re expecting a stealthy shadow drop of the kind we’ve seen with titles like Hi-Fi Rush or leaked remasters, pump the brakes. According to the report, Bethesda isn’t planning any surprise releases. That means a reveal trailer or official announcement is likely to hit well in advance of the 2026 launch.
MP1st does note that we probably shouldn’t expect news during big summer events like Gamescom or the upcoming Xbox Developer_Direct. So while the rollout might be methodical, it’s not imminent.
Multiplatform strategy in motion
While this isn’t official word from Bethesda or Microsoft, the idea of a PS5 version tracks with the broader direction Microsoft has taken recently. Titles like Sea of Thieves and Hi-Fi Rush have already made the leap to other platforms, and Starfield: with its massive scope and modding potential—is a likely candidate for multiplatform expansion.
Historically, Bethesda games have had a strong place on Sony platforms. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Starfield eventually arrive on PS5, particularly if Microsoft is pushing for long tail relevancy and monetization via DLC expansions and continued updates.
What does this mean for Xbox players?
Let’s be real: most players just want more content. If the Expansion 2 rumours are on point, Xbox players could be in for a major update packed with new features and story arcs. With fans growing restless post-Shattered Space, a solid second expansion could be the boost Starfield needs to stay relevant long-term.
While cross-platform players have reason to celebrate, the most promising news here might be for original fans on Xbox and PC who’ve been eagerly anticipating new content and quality-of-life improvements since launch day.
As always, it’s wise to take unconfirmed reports with a grain of space salt. This isn’t the final word, and until Bethesda or Microsoft officially makes the call, consider the Spring 2026 release window tentative but plausible.
Still, this aligns with Microsoft’s evolving multiplatform strategy and helps make sense of Bethesda’s silence on future content since Shattered Space. At the very least, it’s a hint that the universe of Starfield is far from done expanding.
