Overwatch fans are only just starting to familiarise themselves with Orisa, the 24th and latest hero to join the game, but chatter has already switched to the 25th hero to join the roster.
Surprisingly, Overwatch developer, Blizzard, says the next hero is rather far along, and that the studio knows exactly how it will play and what its abilities will be.
Speaking with IBTimes, game director, Jeff Kaplan, said the Overwatch development team was working “aggressively” to get the character ready.
“Yes! I absolutely know who the next hero is going to be,” Kaplan said. “The next hero is very far along in development, so we’re at the point where we’re doing art for that hero, we’re doing a lot of aggressive play-testing.
Kaplan said Blizzard knows what the abilities are and how they interact, and that it’s well ahead of other heroes currently in the “prototype, exploration phase”.
“The next hero we’re pretty set on,” he said.
Orisa joined the Overwatch roster back in March.
After months of teasing and plenty of fan debate, Blizzard finally lifted the lid off the game’s 24th hero.
She turned out to be precisely what many of us at the time expected … except she was a counter to Doomfist, not the actual Doomfist, as was hypothesised by the community.
Acting as an additional tank hero to compliment the likes of Reinhardt, her addition has raised questions about Blizzard’s intention to increase the number of defense heroes in the game.
Kaplan said in the same interview that it wasn’t safe to assume that the next hero would join that class, which may frustrate defense mains looking for a fresh take on the game.
