Titanfall 2 is now available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, bringing with it the adrenaline fuelled, fast-paced mayhem that we came to love about the original. One of the primary criticisms of the first game — as great as it was — was that it lacked a campaign to flesh out the fantastic lore that set the scene for the online component. Players were thrust into a fascinating sci-fi world, but developer Respawn failed to offer the context necessary to really drive the pilot-titan relationship.
Thankfully, we get the promised campaign and fleshed-out story in Titanfall 2, and it’s a blast: finally we get the insight we’ve been craving about the IMC and militia. Importantly, the campaign tells an intriguing tale of friendship and bonding between the pilot and titan, something Respawn tried to establish in the first game’s multiplayer, with mixed results.
It’s highly recommended that you give the campaign a shot: while it’s short, clocking in at only around 5-7 hours depending on whether you search for collectibles, it provides both the necessary training to prepare for the competitive multiplayer, as well as the context necessary to understand the factors behind the conflict. Having that context makes the game and its world infinitely more engaging and interesting.
