Battlefield remastered: ‘If fans want it we’ll do it’

Remasters have become an industry staple this generation, and Battlefield could be the next major franchise to see its classic entries get the re-release treatment.

As EA and DICE trek the marketing trail for Battlefield 1, a lot of attention has been firmly centred on Activision’s Infinite Warfare and its bundling with Modern Warfare Remastered. While Battlefield 1 has certainly been met with the more positive reception of the two, a return to the classic game that is Call Of Duty 4 has reignited interest in that franchise, irrespective of the downvote campaign plaguing its YouTube trailer.

Yet EA isn’t as eager to return to its older Battlefield entries just yet, although that doesn’t mean it won’t in the near future. It’s business, after all, and there hasn’t been anywhere near as much chatter around a Battlefield remaster as there has been around re-releases for some of Call Of Duty‘s more beloved entries.

We could return to those earlier Battlefield entries in the future, though, if there’s enough interest.

“I wouldn’t say never. We’re not doing it right now, we’re focused on Battlefield 1 – but if we think the fans want that I see no reason we couldn’t,” EA’s Patrick Soderlund told IBT.

That’s an unsurprising stance to take. Talk around a Modern Warfare remaster didn’t really exist until a petition for Modern Warfare 2 Remastered surfaced last year. The response to that was massive, and while we’re not getting that game but rather its (arguably better) predecessor, it’s clear that Activision acknowledged interest in Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare series. And if you needed further convincing, there’s also the Modern Warfare Trilogy, although the decision to bring that only to Xbox 360 and PS3 has diehard fans frustrated.
