Fallout 4 Glowing Sea Guide: How to Survive and Find Virgil

Fallout 4 is filled with danger, but no area is more hostile than The Glowing Sea. This quest, part of the main storyline in Act 2, pushes your survival skills to the limit.

In this mission, you’ll leave the boundaries of the Commonwealth and enter the highly irradiated Glowing Sea to locate a missing Institute scientist named Virgil.

Here’s how to prepare and survive one of the most dangerous missions in Fallout 4.

How to Prepare for The Glowing Sea

Before you step foot in this irradiated wasteland, preparation is essential.

1. Equip a Hazmat Suit

You’ll need radiation protection. The Hazmat Suit gives +1000 radiation resistance, which is crucial in this area. If you don’t have one yet, find one before starting the mission.

2. Bring RAD-X and RADAWAY

  • Use RAD-X before entering the Glowing Sea to reduce incoming radiation.
  • Keep RADAWAY on hand to remove radiation damage after fights or encounters.

3. Pack Heavy Ammunition

While the Hazmat Suit protects against radiation, it offers no defense against enemies. Expect to face:

  • Radscorpions
  • Feral Ghouls
  • Other dangerous irradiated creatures

Bring strong weapons and plenty of ammo.

Where is the Glowing Sea Quest?

Open your Pip-Boy and head toward the southwestern edge of the map. Once you get close, a new marker will update on your map, guiding you into the heart of the Glowing Sea.

Passing Through the Crater of Atom

Before reaching your goal, you’ll pass through the Crater of Atom, home to a religious group that worships radiation.

  • Do NOT raise your weapon here: this is holy ground to them.
  • If you’re diplomatic or persuasive, speak to Mother Isolde to gather information peacefully.
  • Aggression is possible, but it will make things more difficult.

Finding Virgil

From the Crater of Atom, head southwest to the Rocky Cave.

Watch out for the Deathclaw lurking nearby—it’s fast and deadly.

Inside the cave, you’ll find Virgil, the escaped Institute scientist. He’ll reveal crucial story details and offer an optional quest to recover a serum that may reverse his mutation.

You can choose to:

  • Help Virgil by retrieving the serum later.
  • Kill Virgil, but this is not required to complete the quest.
  • Steal Virgil’s unique rifle, which is powerful and useful against tougher enemies in the Commonwealth.

Final Tips

  • Keep your radiation levels low throughout the quest.
  • Don’t forget to save often, especially before entering combat zones.
  • Consider bringing a companion in Power Armor to handle enemies while you wear your Hazmat Suit.
