Call of Duty players, rejoice: the notorious weapon camo grind is getting a major overhaul in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. In what might be the most player-friendly change yet, Treyarch is scaling back the headshot requirements for military camo unlocks, and for the first time ever, players can unlock camos across all game modes, including the Campaign.
Fewer headshots, more progress
The recent Black Ops 7 Multiplayer reveal dropped a ton of intel about the upcoming game’s core features. But among the abundance of flashy weapons, dynamic maps, and refined modes, one change stood out: camo progression is being reworked from the ground up.
According to developer Treyarch Studios, unlocking camos is now more streamlined and consistent. Players will only need to secure 80 headshots per weapon to unlock all nine military camo variants, a noticeable drop in grind compared to previous titles, especially Black Ops 6.
Here’s how it’ll break down:
- The first camo unlocks after just 5 headshots
- Progress continues every 10 headshots
- A total of 80 headshots are needed to complete the full set
This more predictable unlock cadence is a welcome shift for players sick of the slog through random stats and unpredictable milestones.
Class-specific Camo Challenges are changing too
It’s not just about fewer headshots. Treyarch is fine-tuning how each weapon class earns its distinctive military camo progress:
- Shotguns will now track Point Blank Kills instead of headshots
- Sniper Rifles will require One Shot Kills for progression
This change feels tailor-made for each weapon’s playstyle. Players using Snipers naturally aim for one-shot takedowns, while Shotgun users often engage up close: it only makes sense that their camo challenges reflect that.
Three special Camos per weapon, with a twist
Another tweak Black Ops 7 is introducing is in the form of special camos. Now, each weapon will contain three special camo options — up from two in Black Ops 6. However, they’re no longer universal skins. Once unlocked, these camos are exclusive to the weapon they were earned with.

Yep, no more dragging your prized camo skin from the Assault Rifle over to your SMG. You’ll now have to grind for every weapon if you want that flex-worthy look on your full loadout. Love it or hate it, it’s pushing players to diversify their arsenals.
You can now earn Camos in every mode, even campaign
One of the most groundbreaking new features? For the first time in Call of Duty history, players can earn and unlock weapon camos across all four major game modes:
- Co-Op Campaign
- Multiplayer
- Zombies
- Call of Duty: Warzone (starting with Season 1)
Think about that for a second. Whether you’re grinding through the narrative with a squad, surviving endless waves of the undead, or climbing the Warzone leaderboards, your camo progression stays active. Casual players won’t feel forced to live solely in Multiplayer anymore, and that flexibility completely changes the grind mindset.
TL;DR: Camo grinding won’t kill your soul this time
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is flipping the script on camo progression. With significantly reduced grinds, smarter class-specific challenges, and full integration across Campaign, Zombies, Multiplayer, and Warzone, it’s clear Treyarch is listening to players who want meaningful progression without unnecessary tedium.
October can’t come soon enough.
