Hollow Knight: Silksong is packed with secrets, but few are quite as essential — and as easy to miss — as the Fractured Mask. Serving as a powerful defensive Tool, this rare item gives Hornet one last gasp of life before succumbing to fatal damage. But here’s the catch: it’s totally missable, and unless you explore methodically, you could walk past it without even knowing.

Lucky for anyone early in their journey through Silksong, the Fractured Mask is available in Act 1. But as with many things in Pharloom, it’s tucked away in a place you’d rarely stumble into by accident. Here’s everything you need to know to snag it while you still can.
Where to find the Fractured Mask in Silksong
To get your hands on the Fractured Mask, you’ll want to make your way to Hunter’s March, one of the earliest areas in the game. That’s where you’ll find Mottled Skarr, a reclusive and mysterious seller of obscure Tools. But locating him isn’t straightforward: his shop is hidden behind a secret passage above a trapped bench.
Step-by-step: Finding Mottled Skarr
- Complete the Flexile Pines quest to unlock the Drifter’s Cloak. You’ll need it to ride air currents and reach vertical areas.
- Head to the top level of a tall shaft within Hunter’s March. Look for the air current that lifts you up: it’s marked clearly on the map post-cloak.
- From the top, move left into what appears to be a dead-end room. It’s got some suspiciously barren vibes.
- Hug the left wall and jump leftward to reveal a hidden path.
- Cautiously navigate past traps to reach Mottled Skarr, who’s perched at the far-left side of his lair.
Fractured Mask Cost
Once you find him, Mottled Skarr will offer the following Tools for sale:
- Fractured Mask – 260 Rosaries
- Curveclaw – 140 Rosaries
- Shard Bundle – 50 Rosaries
Make sure you’ve got at least 260 Rosaries on hand, because if you leave and forget to come back before Act 2 kicks into gear … well, bad news.
Missable Alert: Mottled Skarr Dies in Act 2
Yeah, that escalated quickly. As soon as Act 2 begins, Mottled Skarr dies. When you return to his hidden quarters later in the game, you’ll only find his corpse and a dropped Curveclaw. The Fractured Mask, tragically, is gone.

And here’s the tricky part: nobody knows for sure if the item becomes acquirable elsewhere later on. So if you’re a completionist, or just want a safety net in battle, don’t wait. Get it in Act 1 and thank yourself later.
What does the Fractured Mask actually do?
Here’s the official in-game description:
Shields against critical damage but shatters on impact.
In plain English? The Fractured Mask grants you one-time immunity against fatal or heavy damage. That can mean:
- Taking a hit that would reduce two hearts of health: Fractured Mask absorbs one of those hearts worth of damage.
- A lethal hit that would end Hornet’s run: Fractured Mask negates the hit entirely.
After absorbing that one-life-saving impact, it shatters. The mask can only be restored by resting at a bench. There’s no magic regen over time: this isn’t your grandma’s health potion.
How Fractured Mask works in combat
Once equipped, a distinctive cracked-mask icon appears in the first slot of your health bar. That’s your visual cue it’s active and ready to tank a hit for you. Think of it like a backup parachute: it’s not flashy, but when things go south fast, it might be all that stands between life and death.

Worth It?
Absolutely. In a game where every swing, jump, and dodge could mean life or death, a Tool that gives you a second chance is invaluable. The Fractured Mask might not last long in combat, but the moments it can save you in? They’ll matter. Just do yourself a favour: don’t leave Mottled Skarr hanging until Act 2. Or you’ll be the one mourning.
