Borderlands 4 is bigger and bolder, but fans divided after full map size reveal

Borderlands 4 is officially one of the biggest AAA releases of the year, but not everyone is thrilled about how it’s being teased. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford recently pulled back the curtain on the entire Borderlands 4 map, showing off every collectible location two months ahead of launch.

The World of Kairos: Huge map, 200+ Bobbleheads

In a Twitter thread, Pitchford proudly showcased the open world of Kairos, marking all 200+ Marcus bobblehead collectibles spread across the landscape. He called it proof of Gearbox’s attention to detail and the seamless design they’re aiming for.

While the reveal gives fans a sense of the map’s massive scale, it’s also rubbed many the wrong way. For collectors and exploration junkies, the thrill of the hunt is a huge part of the Borderlands appeal, so seeing every location ahead of time feels like a major spoiler.

Fans split over the spoiler

Plenty of fans voiced their frustration, arguing that part of the fun is uncovering the world organically. Pitchford, however, brushed off the backlash, replying: “I can point you to the haystack. Good luck finding the needle hidden in it!”

While that might reassure some, it hasn’t stopped the debate about whether revealing every secret upfront kills the magic.

Pitchford’s controversial comments don’t help

This isn’t the first time Pitchford has drawn heat lately. His dismissive “If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen” comment about the rumoured $80 price tag sparked plenty of memes, and even Devolver Digital weighed in. He also claimed Borderlands 4 will stay full price far longer than Borderlands 3, further frustrating players.

Release Date Locked In

Despite the drama, excitement for Borderlands 4 is sky-high. The game launches September 12, 2025, on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version arriving sometime next year.

Whether you love spoilers or wish you could erase them from your mind, one thing’s for sure: the world of Kairos will be massive, the bobbleheads plentiful, and the chaos dialed up to eleven — exactly how Borderlands should be.

Final Thoughts

Even with a full map out there, Pitchford’s confidence suggests Gearbox is betting big that exploration, humor, and loot-chasing will keep players engaged. Just don’t expect those collectibles to stay secret for long.

Mark your calendar for September 12: it’s almost time to dive back into the mayhem!
