Overwatch 2‘s first major update has dropped, with the patch notes detailing a number of key changes coming to the game only a week after launch. Most notably, the Numbani map returns to the matchmaking pool after being mysteriously absent from the game since day one, while the Competitive play ranking system has received some improvements following widespread criticism of lower-than-expected ratings.

The latest Overwatch 2 patch notes paint a picture of a game deep in the improvement phase of its release cycle. A number of general bug fixes have been addressed in the first update, but the big focus is on the changes (or improvements) to Overwatch 2‘s Competitive mode.

A common piece of feedback and frustration from the Overwatch 2 community post-launch has been the discrepancy between Overwatch Competitive rankings, and the first SR received in Overwatch 2, which is seeing a lot of Diamond and Platinum players being placed in Silver and Bronze rather inexplicably.

The patch notes details that moving forwards, players who were “ranked too low” should not be able to “climb the ranks faster” in their first rank update, provided their true rank is not accurately reflected in their performance. There’s no obvious or clear way to truly know this but it goes without saying that if you finished Overwatch in Diamond for Support, if you’re in Bronze in Overwatch 2 you should be able to climb faster than your typical Bronze player.

Additionally, OG Overwatch map Numbani is slowly returning to the map rotation after being weirdly excluded at launch. This was likely due to Blizzard’s intent to cycle through maps with each season, although the vocal Overwatch 2 community likely prompted some action here given it’s one of the more popular maps.

  • Many players were ranked too low during the first week of Overwatch 2, so we are implementing a boost as players continue to play games for those affected by this issue.
  • Players who were ranked too low could have the feeling of being stuck in this rank. Moving forward, players should be able to climb the ranks in their first rank update assuming they’re supposed to be higher based on their performance.
  • Players who haven’t ranked will not experience this issue after this patch.
