With the Modern Warfare beta now live across PS4, Xbox One and PC (you no longer need to have a pre-order code to play it), Call of Duty fans across the globe are jumping into one of the year’s most anticipated games.
Hype is high for this year’s Call of Duty, and so there’s a lot of eyes on this open beta to see how the game’s multiplayer holds up, and if Infinity Ward can reclaim some of its older glory from the original Modern Warfare days.
Certainly one of the ways it can reclaim this glory is by feeding into the nostalgic cravings of older Call of Duty players, who are arguably looking forward to Modern Warfare more than younger players who may have been introduced to Call of Duty at the start of this decade, and, therefore, after the Modern Warfare series peaked.
How can Infinity Ward get older and more skeptical Call of Duty players to buy in? Well, if the latest leak is anything to go by, one way may be by bringing back older maps from the likes of Modern Warfare 2.
The current word doing the rounds across Reddit, Call of Duty forums, and also unveiled by the likes of Hollow on YouTube (seriously, check out his videos if you’re a Call of Duty fan), is that RUST, one of the more divisive, popular, and hated maps from 2009’s Modern Warfare 2, has been spotted in the files of the PC version of the game.
Having the map appear in the files isn’t a sure thing that it will indeed eventually appear in the final version of Modern Warfare. It could be that Infinity Ward was simply testing out the viability of the map in the game, testing it out to see if it worked in a modern Call of Duty game setting, and that remnants of the map were left in the files once it was decided not to include it.
It may also be part of the developer’s long support plan, which will include free map DLC, and it would make sense to feed into the Modern Warfare hysteria, which, let’s be honest here, has been drummed up to reinvigorate interest in the Call of Duty franchise.
The exciting thing about the sheer prospect of RUST coming back to Modern Warfare and Call of Duty is that the map’s design would fit in perfectly with the likes of 2v2 and 1v1. It’s small, tight, and just perfect for those quick, small matches where precision and quick reflexes are so pivotal to success.
Of course we should take all of this chatter with a huge grain of salt given the RUST map files were noticed within the files for a beta and not the full game, and we can probably bet that Infinity Ward will remove them now seeing as there’s so much talk about it. But nonetheless it’s yet another thing that helps ramp up the excitement train for Modern Warfare.
