Pokken Tournament DX for Switch features local multiplayer, 3v3 battles, ranked play

The rumours were swirling about Pokemon Stars, the mainline RPG series that would make its console debut on Switch, but Nintendo revealed something much different during its Direct overnight.

Namco Bandai’s Pokken Tournament DX will hit Switch on September 22, bringing the beloved fighting game to Nintendo’s latest console after originally launching in Japanese arcades before hitting Wii U back in 2015.

Pokken Tournament DX will use the Switch’s online functionality and portability in promising fashion, enhancing the game’s cooperative and competitive multiplayer offerings.

It will also allow for local wireless multiplayer between Switch consoles, as well as with Joy-Con controllers on a single screen.

Pokken Tournament DX on Switch will also introduce 3v3 team battles, online ranked play, and friend-only group matches.

Also bringing with it to Switch are five new Pokemon: Darkrai, Scizor, Empoleon, Croagunk and Pokemon Sun and Moon‘s owl archer, Decidueye.

Nintendo also announced Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, which is coming to 3DS in November.

Pokken Tournament DX will be available to play at E3 next week. We’ll be on the showroom floor to check it out, so stay tuned for our preview in the coming days.

The event will also host an E3 tournament, joining the likes of Splatoon 2 and Arms on June 14 for four two-player competitive bouts.

Pokken Tournament DX launches on Nintendo Switch on September 22.
