Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is unique in that, unlike every other Mario Kart game before it, you don’t need to spend hours upon hours playing it in order to unlock certain characters and aesthetics.
Everything is available from the get-go, except for one important, lucrative character: Gold Mario. All of the content available in the Wii U version of Mario Kart 8 is available in Deluxe on Switch.
Gold Mario is, of course, exclusive to the Switch version of Mario Kart 8, so now we know what the “Deluxe” in the name means.
In this guide we’ll take you through the steps to unlock Gold Mario. Here we go!
Step 1
Finish first in every 200CC racing event.
Step 2
Race as Gold Mario!
That’s it! You don’t need to do anything else. Pretty simply, hey? That’s 12 cups all up, including all of the original tracks from Mario Kart 8, and all of the DLC tracks, which are included from the get-go in Deluxe.

So......win each event individually? Or win all events consecutively to get the 3 stars and trophy for each cup?
If it's the latter, it will take a while. I'm not yet 3 stars on all the 150cc tracks. Too scared to play 200cc. :)
Also you still need to earn points playing to unlock the extra cars, wheels and gliders. There are heaps of them to collect, so there is plenty of replay value.
Heck I spent 2 hours the other night playing a single event in time trial. Managed to get myself slightly on the good side of the distribution curve of times though......gyeah. :)
Actually, we should start something to compare track times easily on the forum. Would be cool.
