Perhaps the most exciting thing about Star Wars Battlefront 2 is that it will have a single-player campaign, and Disney appears to have plenty of faith in EA and DICE to tell a story worthy of Star Wars lore.
The recently revealed trailer for Battlefront 2 focuses a lot on the game’s story, a far cry from the multiplayer-only outing available in 2015’s entry.
From the dialogue in the trailer we can gather that our main “protagonist”, or playable character, or whatever you want to call her, is fighting for the Empire, and aims to avenge the Emperor.
Iden Versio is the playable character, and DICE appears intent on showing a structured, coherent perspective of the Empire’s objectives, and why it so aggressively battles the Rebellion for control of the galaxy.
EA also confirmed that Battlefront 2‘s story is indeed canon, meaning we could see more of Iden in films and other Star Wars media over the years.
Further, Battlefront 2‘s campaign will offer different perspectives, while still staying firmly focused on Iden’s story.
In an interview with Eurogamer, single player game director, Mark Thompson, spoke about the game’s campaign, and how different heroes and villains fit into the experience.
“We take all of our cues from how to tell a Star Wars story working with Lucasfilm story group, analysing the movies, breaking down the beats and flow of Star Wars storytelling,” Thompson explained. “So yeah, it is a continuous story with a beginning, middle and end and you follow Iden’s journey for 30 years from the end of Jedi up to the Force Awakens at Starkiller base.”
Thompson explained that Battlefront 2‘s campaign won’t be like the fantastic War Stories from Battlefield 1, but that instead it will “follow Iden through this journey”, while occasionally switching sides and playing from the perspective of one of the “iconic heroes”.
“[That’s] just part of Battlefront’s DNA,” Thompson said. “Sometimes you’re a Trooper, sometimes you’re a pilot, and sometimes you’re Luke Skywalker with a lightsaber.”
Thompson also reiterated that the DICE team had confirmed Kylo Ren as a playable hero.
Star Wars: Battlefront 2 launches November 17 on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
