Square Enix dropped a bombshell overnight, revealing a partnership with Marvel that will see a brand new Avengers game come to PS4, Xbox One and pC.

Tomb Raider and Deus Ex developers Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal will join forces for the new game, the first in what is a multi-title parnership between Square and Marvel. Check out the reveal trailer below.

Square says the game will be based on a “completely original story”, putting to bed rumours that it would be set after Civil War and before Infinity War, which doesn’t hit theatres until 2018.

The publisher is also confident that the game can kickstart a self-sustainable universe that will last “for years to come”.

“The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise,” Square Enix said in a statement. “Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come. More details on The Avengers project and other games will be announced in 2018.”

That puts the release of this exciting new project quite a bit into the future.

Marvel says the partnership offers a new way for the company to tell and expand its stories for its fans.

“By partnering with Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal, we are now working with two of the industry’s most talented and respected game development studios to bring Marvel stories to life in ways our fans have never experienced,” said Marvel Entertainment Senior Vice President, Games & Innovation, Jay Ong.

“The Avengers project is a perfect example of how Marvel is making games a key part of the landscape for Marvel storytelling, alongside comics, television and film.

“We can only do this by matching our greatest Super Heroes with the world’s top developers, such as the creative minds at Square Enix.”

Squares hope is that with the new partnership, it can create a “new entertainment powerhouse”, one that mimics the success of the Marvel cinematic universe.

“Marvel’s diverse, innovative universe has created millions of longtime fans, including all of us,” said Square Enix Americas and Europe CEO, Phil Rogers.

“It’s exciting to bring together Square Enix’s award-winning development studios with Marvel’s extraordinary storytellers to establish a new entertainment powerhouse. This collaboration of passion and talent will craft epic, imaginative experiences allowing gamers to live out their Super Hero dreams like never before.”

The Avengers will be developed by Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind Rise of The Tomb Raider. It will work in collaboration with Eidos Montreal, the studio behind the past two Deus Ex games, Human Revolution and Mankind Divided.
