Rare could finally return to its heyday with its upcoming Xbox and Windows PC game, Sea Of Thieves.
I played the game for about 30 minutes at gamescom 2016, and it was a glorious blend of hilarious ineptness and structured mayhem. I assume that’s what Rare was going for: an all-out pirate party of shenanigans and violence.
Now of course in typical Rare fashion it doesn’t go the way of, say, Assassin’s Creed on the violence front, but Sea Of Thieves certainly doesn’t shy away encouraging conflict. It is a pirate game, after all.
It’s currently scheduled for a 2017 release date, so here’s hoping for a strong start to the year, and that the game reignites Rare’s place in the industry.
If you want to test out Sea of Thieves before release, Rare is inviting players to join the Sea Of Thieves Insider Programme, which will select players across Windows PC and Xbox One to test out the game and provide constructive feedback. You could very well be part of the development process!
The first playtest will start on December 16, with more planned after that.
It’s limited to 1000 people, and you’ll need to fill in a length questionnaire, so be sure to get in quick to apply if you want to be among the first people in the world to play Sea Of Thieves.
If you do get in, you’ll need to agree to an NDA, meaning you won’t be able to stream or talk about your experiences.
I highly recommend trying to get in and give it a go. If you can get some friends together, Sea Of Thieves can be a hell of a lot of fun.
