The world’s ‘most valuable Pokemon card’ sells for a small fortune at auction

A new record for Pokemon card prices has just been set in the US, and it might have you rummaging through your collection in the hope of landing a small fortune.

Heritage Auctions has revealed that on Monday, a Pikachu Illustrator card sold for a staggering $54,970 USD, which is roughly $74,000 AUD.

“The Pikachu Illustrator Card was given in January of 1998 to winners of the CoroCoro Comic Illustration Contest,” Barry Sandoval, director of operations for comics at Heritage Auctions, said in a statement. “Only 20 to 39 copies of this card were released, 10 of which are graded in top condition and it is unknown how many still remain with the public.”

The last Illustrator card sold for $23,000 USD ($31,000 AUD approx.) back in 2000.

Interestingly, it’s claimed that the rise of the Pokemon Go smartphone game, which at one point attracted 20 million active users, as well as heightened interest in the franchise following the success of Pokemon Sun and Moon, has led to a Pokemon Card boom, sending prices skyrocketing.

This particular card now currently holds the highest sale price for an individual Pokemon card. It’s considered to be among the rarest in the world, and is the only card to have “Illustrator” instead of “Trainer” printed at the top. It’s also one of only a few Japanese promotional cards that feature a double-star rarity rating.
