Is Wave Race about to be revived for Nintendo Switch?

Wave Race 64 is probably one of the best racing games of all time. It launched alongside the Nintendo 64 back in 1996 to critical acclaim, and seemed to initiate what many thought would be a long, storied franchise.

Unfortunately, outside of a solid albeit forgettable sequel on the Gamecube in Wave Race: Blue Storm, the series hasn’t gotten the love from Nintendo that it deserves. Neither the Wii nor the Wii U got a Wave Race entry, which was disappointing considering the quality and appeal of the franchise as a marketable launch title.

Interestingly, new reports suggest Nintendo could be looking to revive the franchise, and Nintendo Switch might be just the platform to do it on.

A trademark filed on EUIPE (the European Union Intellectual Property Office) by Nintendo through a representative company lists Wave Race as a registered trademark.

Now of course, simply registering a trademark doesn’t mean a game’s on the cards: countless times we’ve seen companies simply topping-up on a trademark just as they’re about to expire. Sony trademarked Syphon Filter a few years back but that franchise is essentially dead.

That said, it would make sense for Wave Race to get rebooted on the Switch, and the console itself seems perfect for it.
