Metal Gear Solid 5 D-Dog Guide: How to Unlock and Use Your Canine Companion

“D-Dog” might sound like a nickname for your best mate, but in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, D-Dog (or DD) is one of Big Boss’s most valuable allies on the battlefield.

DD can sniff out enemies, prisoners, animals, weapons, vehicles, mines, and even medicinal plants, then mark them for you on the iDroid map. Here’s everything you need to know about how to unlock D-Dog and maximize his skills.

How to Unlock D-Dog in Metal Gear Solid 5

Follow these steps to recruit your four-legged scout:

  1. Complete Mission 02.
  2. After the mission, a puppy will appear near the deployment zones of Missions 03, 04, or 05. He also appears during free roam at these spots:
  • Shago Village
  • East Communications Post
  • Wakh Sing Barracks
  1. When you find the pup, tranquilize him and use the Fulton device to send him to Mother Base.
  2. Head back to Mother Base and watch the cutscene with Ocelot and the puppy.
  3. Complete six more missions. Replays count, but at least three must be from Missions 07–10.
  4. Visit Mother Base again. Then leave. A cutscene with a grown DD will play, officially adding him as a buddy.

D-Dog Scouting and Bond Mechanics

The stronger your bond with DD, the better his scouting abilities. Here’s how his detection range scales with your bond:

Bond LevelScouting Range
Below 25%60 meters
25%–50%80 meters
50%–75%100 meters
Above 75%120 meters

As the bond grows, DD becomes a powerful tactical asset in stealth and combat missions alike.

D-Dog Skills and Commands

DD gains new abilities as you equip Big Boss with specific gear and increase your bond level. Here’s a full list:

Basic Commands (No Requirement)

  • Wait – DD holds position.
  • Whistle / DD – DD returns to your location.

Bond-Based Skills

  • Bark (Requires 25% bond) – DD barks to distract or alert enemies.

Combat Abilities (Gear Dependent)

  • Keep ’em Busy (Naked gear) – DD attacks the target to stall, giving you time to act. If you wait too long, the enemy alerts others.
  • Do It – Kill (Sneaking Knife) – DD kills the enemy.
  • Do It – Knock Out (Sneaking Stun) – DD knocks out the enemy.
  • Do It – Wound (Battle Dress) – DD seriously injures the enemy.
  • Get It (Tactical Fulton) – DD extracts nearby enemies or animals using Fulton.

To maximise DD’s usefulness, take him on missions frequently to increase your bond. Equip the right outfits based on your tactical needs, whether stealth, capture, or elimination.
