Gears Of War 4 is now upon us, and with a new entry in the iconic Xbox franchise comes yet another version of the popular wave mode, Horde. This exciting new iteration, called Horde 3.0, introduces a number of new gameplay features, including skill progression to help players level up as they work through the enemy waves.

Cooperative play returns, with up to five players teaming up to fight off 50 waves of enemies. As expected, a new boss is introduced with every 10 waves, a system that was first introduced in Gears Of War 3.

It’s the definitive Gears mode, and once that needs to be played with friends. You can try your luck with randoms online, and if you do, this guide may be of particular use to you as you prepare to enter the battlefield.

This guide will take you through Horde 3.0 basics, including Cards, Classes, Fortifications, and Class skill upgrades.

Horde Cards | Classes | Bounties | Difficulty Multipliers | Ribbons | Fortifications

Horde Cards

Horde Cards are a way to unlock new content and features. These unlocks can come in a number of different variation, from player customisation features, to Horde equipment, to new abilities. There are also Bounties, which offer additional rewards for when a player completes them.

These Cards are unlocked through Gear Packs, which are purchased with Credits. These credits act as the in-game currency, and can be earned by playing Versus or Horde mode. You can also purchase them from the only store using really currency.

Cards are graded based on the rarity of finding specific content within the pack: cards vary in this regard, between “Common” and “Legendary” (rare).

The types of cards available are as follows:

  • Characters: These are characters that you can use in Horde and Versus mode.
  • Weapon Skins: These skins allow you to customise your loadouts and weapons for a more personalised look. Each skin card unlocks a specific skin for a particular weapon. You can also customise Power Weapons, so that they can change the look once they’re spawned on a map.
  • Emblems: These cards allow you to customise your player identity in Gears Of War 4. These Emblems appear behind your username in the multiplayer lobby.
  • Bounties: Bounties can be extremely tough, and generally task Versus and Horde players with a variety of different challenges. They reward XP and Credits once they’re been completed. The good news is that Bounty cards are only consumed once they’ve been completed, so there’s no time limit or maximum tries.
  • Equipment and Abilities: The Coalition will add new equipment and Abilities to Horde 3.0, so keep an eye out for these cards.

Scraping and Crafting Horde Cards

All Cards — both Horde and Versus — can be destroyed in exchange for scrap, which can then be used to craft other cards. The rarer a card is, the more scrap it offers, while these same cards require more scrap to be crafted.

COMMON

  • Scrap: 5
  • Scrap Required To Craft: 40

RARE

  • Scrap: 20
  • Scrap Required To Craft: 100

EPIC

  • Scrap: 150
  • Scrap Required To Craft: 600

LEGENDARY

  • Scrap: 600
  • Scrap Required To Craft: 2400

Card Upgrading

You can also upgrade any Class Skill card duplicates you have. Depending on the Level of the card, you’ll need a certain number of duplicates in order to level up the card. You’ll generally need 20 duplicates of the same card in order to completely max out a skill.

Card Level 2: 1 Duplicate Card Need To Upgrade

Card Level 33 Duplicate Cards

Card Level 4: 5 Duplicate Cards

Card Level 5: 10 Duplicate Cards

Classes

General Skills | Engineer Skills | Heavy Skills | Scout Skills | Sniper Skills | Soldier Skills

There are five classes to choose from in Horde 3.0:

  • Engineer
  • Heavy
  • Scout
  • Soldier
  • Sniper

Each class has specific roles and objectives to help the team. Having a well-rounded team with each class represented is going to be an important key in your push through the waves.

As you progress through Horde 3.0, you’ll earn points, which push you towards the next level. Levels 2, 5, 8 and 10 are of particular importance, as they unlock an extra skill slot, which allows you to use additional cards for that class.

Some General Skills cards can be used by any player of any class, but all classes also have their own specific skills. Here’s the full list of skills available:
