Xbox Game Pass Cloud Streaming now available for Core and Standard Tiers

Microsoft just dropped a major Game Pass update that’ll have more players diving into the cloud than ever before, and no, we’re not talking weather here. Xbox Game Pass Cloud Streaming, once exclusive to the Ultimate tier, is now rolling out to Core and Standard subscribers as well. And if you’re part of the Xbox Insider program, you can try it out right now.

Cloud Gaming goes mainstream

For years, Game Pass Ultimate subscribers have enjoyed the freedom of booting up massive games straight from the cloud: no giant downloads or storage complaints. That experience is now creeping into the more affordable tiers: Xbox Game Pass Core and Standard.

Starting August 27, Microsoft confirmed in a new official blog post that Xbox Insiders subscribed to these lower tiers can now access Xbox Cloud Gaming. This marks a major shift for the subscription model, potentially attracting even more users to jump onboard Core and Standard instead of going straight for Ultimate.

From Console to Cloud: What exactly is changing?

If you’re rocking either the Core or Standard Game Pass plan, here’s what’s coming your way:

  • Cloud Gaming Access: Previously locked behind Ultimate, cloud gaming is now available for Insiders on Core and Standard.
  • PC Game Access: Select PC titles will also become available to these tiers, expanding the platform’s value beyond just consoles.

That’s a noteworthy bump since these tiers had remained more console-focused until now. Core tier already includes access to online multiplayer and a curated library of titles. Standard filled a middle ground after replacing Xbox Live Gold with more features in 2023. Now? You could argue they’re both inching closer to Ultimate territory, but without the full-price tag.

So, what’s the catch?

Well, if you’re not in the Xbox Insider program, you’ll need to wait a bit longer. While Microsoft hasn’t announced a public release date for the full rollout, these features are expected to make their way to all subscribers eventually.

Still, the move feels inevitable. Microsoft is clearly testing the waters. And considering how huge cloud gaming has become for Ultimate members, it’s no surprise they want to bring that experience to more players. As Microsoft’s VP of Next Generation explained, a large portion of Ultimate users stream their games often, proof enough that the demand is real.

Microsoft hints at a Cloud-Only tier

This update doesn’t come in isolation. Just days ago, Microsoft revealed to The Verge that it was exploring a “more affordable” Game Pass option focused purely on cloud gaming. That means those who don’t care about downloads or even owning a console might soon have a dedicated, budget-friendly way to get their gaming fix. If that happens, it could drastically widen the Game Pass audience and make Xbox’s ecosystem incredibly versatile.

The bigger picture: Game Pass keeps winning

With its constantly expanding library of new games and day-one releases, Xbox Game Pass continues to be one of the biggest bargains in gaming. These recent changes only sweeten the deal, particularly for those who’ve been sitting on the fence about the Core or Standard tiers.

So, if you’ve ever wished Game Pass was more accessible — or just wanted to play your favourite games on-the-go without a bulky install — your moment might finally be here. And if Microsoft keeps pushing in this direction, don’t be surprised if cloud gaming becomes the norm rather than the premium.
