Xbox Cloud Gaming free tier with ads set to launch soon

Microsoft appears to be gearing up for a game-changer in its Xbox Cloud Gaming ecosystem, literally. Following recent updates that expanded Xbox Cloud Gaming access to all Xbox Game Pass tiers (with variable features), the company is now preparing to launch a brand-new free ad-supported streaming tier.

According to a report by Tom Warren at The Verge, internal testing is already underway. If Microsoft’s plans roll out as expected, soon you’ll be able to stream some games on xCloud without a Game Pass subscription — you’ll just need to watch a couple of ads first.

Here’s what the free tier might look like

Sources close to Microsoft’s internal development have revealed that the ad-supported model includes a short advertising window — specifically, two minutes of preroll ads — before gaining access to a game. These play sessions are reportedly capped at one hour per session, and up to five hours of play per month. That said, these figures are flexible and may shift in the public release.

The Verge notes that this experience will be tailored around a carefully selected lineup of titles, including:

  • The “Stream Your Own Game” lineup
  • Games from Xbox’s popular Free Play Days program
  • The beloved Xbox Retro Classics collection

This is great news if you’ve been itching to try xCloud but didn’t want to commit to a Game Pass subscription. Whether you’re on the fence or just curious, this might be your chance to dip your toes in without pulling out your wallet.

Where and how will it work?

While the service is still in its test phase, it’s reportedly being trialed across PC, web browsers, consoles, and handheld devices. That lines up with Microsoft’s clear mission of making Xbox Cloud Gaming as accessible — and ubiquitous — as possible.

This free tier is expected to hit public beta “soon,” though Microsoft hasn’t officially confirmed a date. The full rollout, meanwhile, is penciled in for the coming months.

Curious how this might stack up to services like NVIDIA GeForce NOW or Amazon Luna? On paper, limiting users to five hours a month seems conservative, but it’s also a low-friction way to bring more gamers into the ecosystem — especially those hesitant about subscription services. Throw in access to classic Xbox gems, and we may be looking at a killer entry point for casual players or retro enthusiasts.

Microsoft’s evolving cloud gaming strategy

Introducing a free tier seems like a strategic next step following this week’s expansion of Xbox Game Pass Cloud Gaming access across all membership levels. Microsoft is clearly working to broaden its player base by offering multiple access points — and the advert-supported model is one of the few remaining cards they had yet to play.

And let’s be honest: two minutes of ads for an hour of free gaming? Not the worst trade-off. Even more so when the games include fan-favourite classics or spotlight time-limited offerings from Free Play Days.

We’ll keep you posted once Microsoft makes the official announcement — it seems like it’s just around the corner.

Until then, maybe think about which old-school Xbox classic you’d love to revisit … for the cost of a snack-sized ad break.
