One of Overwatch 2’s more experimental single-player offerings is headed for the vault. Blizzard has officially confirmed that the Hero Mastery mode will be removed from Overwatch 2 starting in Season 19, which is expected to launch in late October or early November

What is Hero Mastery in Overwatch 2?
First introduced in September 2023 during the mid-Season 6 update, Hero Mastery was a solo mode focused on helping players master specific heroes through timed obstacle courses and ability challenges. Think of it like Overwatch’s answer to training gym sessions — short bursts of skill-focused gameplay tailored to individual characters like Tracer, Reinhardt, and Sojourn.
Over time, Blizzard added new courses to support more than a dozen heroes. But while the idea was cool — a custom-tailored gauntlet for each hero — the game mode just never gained the traction of more competitive or team-based options like Quick Play, Competitive Play, or the newer Stadium offerings.
Why Blizzard is shutting Hero Mastery down
According to an official forum post by Overwatch 2 Community Manager Kaedi, no new Hero Mastery content will be coming, and all existing courses will be fully removed when Season 19 launches. That gives players just under two months to finish any remaining Hero Mastery courses before they disappear for good.
The main reason for Hero Mastery’s removal? Player engagement. The mode simply didn’t attract a consistent audience. It suffered the same fate as the Hero Mastery: Gauntlet multiplayer mode, which was discontinued in June 2024. Blizzard wants to refocus development resources on higher-performing experiences like the recently introduced Payload Race in Stadium, core multiplayer, and Competitive Play.
Get these rewards before it’s too late
If you’ve been putting off jumping into Hero Mastery, now’s the time to act. During Season 18, players can still complete Lifetime challenges tied to Hero Mastery and unlock respective rewards. In addition to that, finishing Mastery I and Mastery III challenges will net you a couple of extra bonuses:
- One free Overwatch 2 Epic Loot Box
- An exclusive Player Title
Even if you’ve already completed the challenges before the upcoming sunset, those rewards are still on their way to your profile. So if your backlog needs clearing, this is your last chance to cash in.

What’s Replacing Hero Mastery?
While it’s always a little bittersweet to see content go, there’s a silver lining here. Season 18 and the upcoming Season 19 are shaping up to offer plenty of new reasons to dive back in. Blizzard recently dropped a trailer showing off what’s on the way, and it includes some pretty juicy updates:
- Overhauled progression system to better reflect time and skill
- The Payload Race mode in Stadium for a faster-paced twist on standard Escort
- New support hero, Wuyang, bringing fresh mechanics to the support meta
- A crossover event with Persona 5, featuring skins that turn Overwatch heroes into members of the Phantom Thieves. Blizzard has confirmed the event will feature a Joker skin and at least three additional themed skins for other heroes.
If you’re someone who loved the idea of refining your mechanics in isolation, or just wanted to grind out every bit of content, this might sting a little. Hero Mastery offered a unique way to learn and challenge yourself outside of team pressure. But its departure isn’t without purpose: it makes room for modes that connect more with the wider player base.
And who knows? Blizzard has a history of revisiting old ideas. Maybe a more dynamic, engaging version of Hero Mastery will one day be reimagined under a different name or format.
So say your goodbyes to Hero Mastery: the timer’s ticking. Whether it was bashing bots as Reinhardt or zipping through targets as Tracer, this mode had its moments. But in the ever-evolving world of Overwatch 2, nothing is sacred for long. Gear up, complete your challenges, and get those exclusive rewards before Season 19 wipes it all clean.
