Headliners: The must-plays of this month

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is leading this wave. Now freed from the clunky Call of Duty HQ launcher, players can download and install it as a standalone title on Game Pass starting September 17. That same day, the breakout spin-off Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor — a single-player twist on the beloved co-op shooter — also joins the lineup. It’s shaping up to be a major highlight for fans of strategy and rogue-lite chaos.

September 18 brings another big one: Frostpunk 2. If the original tested your moral compass and management chops, the sequel is aiming to crank up the philosophical and gameplay tension even further. Also dropping the same day? Wobbly Life — a light and chaotic sandbox co-op game perfect for messing around with friends.

Want a classic with prestige? Hades arrives on September 19. With Hades 2 currently in early access and scheduled for a Switch-exclusive full launch later this month, the appearance of the first game on Game Pass is eyebrow-raising. Could it hint that Hades 2 on Xbox isn’t far behind? We’ll be watching closely.

If you’re itching for JRPG-style storytelling or sweeping fantasy worlds, Square Enix’s Visions of Mana nails the brief. It drops day one on Game Pass come September 25, likely to be one of this month’s hidden gems for fans of old-school adventure with new-school polish.

Game Previews and Hidden Gems

Game Preview titles are also carrying weight this month. Overthrown and Endless Legend 2 are both early-access style entries, giving players a chance to experience and shape development in real-time. These previews can be hit or miss, but for strategy fans eager to test what’s next, they’re well worth a look.

We’re also getting a surprisingly wholesome addition in Peppa Pig: World Adventures on September 25, perfect if you’re sharing the console with younger family members. And to cap off the month, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light returns on September 30, a nice nod to Tomb Raider fans who enjoy the franchise’s more puzzle-heavy, top-down gameplay moments.

What’s coming next?

While September clearly isn’t holding back, Microsoft is already hyping October as a potentially even more packed month. Big first-party exclusives are coming, including Double Fine’s mysterious new creation, Keeper, and Obsidian’s hotly-anticipated sequel to The Outer Worlds. And let’s not forget Ninja Gaiden 4, published under Xbox’s banner, carving, slashing, and high-speed chaos has never looked more promising.

As Game Pass continues to mature and diversify its offerings, it’s becoming impossible to ignore its unmatched value proposition. Whether you’re into fast-paced shooters, brooding strategy sims, or whimsical platformers, September ensures your backlog will continue to overflow.
