Black Ops 7 Beta update overhauls TTK, door mechanics, and Weapon XP

Just 24 hours into the beta, Black Ops 7 is already shaping up to be one of Treyarch’s most reactive and community-driven launches yet. A major weekend update is set to overhaul gameplay mechanics in response to intense fan feedback, specifically around time-to-kill (TTK), automatic doors, and weapon XP. Whether you’re in the beta already or waiting to jump in during the open stage on October 5, there’s plenty to look forward to in the next patch.

TTK getting rebalanced based on early feedback

One of the biggest hot topics coming out of the Black Ops 7 beta has been TTK: Time To Kill. According to Treyarch, player feedback and internal data both pointed to TTK being faster than expected. While the original feel aimed to match Black Ops 6, the studio is now preparing a weapon balancing update designed to fine-tune kill times across all weapon classes.

This balancing pass isn’t just about slowing things down: it’s about ensuring every gun hits the sweet spot between fun and fairness. Treyarch wants each of the 30 weapons available at launch to feel distinct, competitive within its category, and true to its design role. The adjustment aims to keep firefights intense but not frustratingly quick.

Automatic doors: Change is coming

Manual doors are out, but automatic doors have stirred up just as much controversy. While only five of the 16 launch 6v6 maps even have automatic doors, Treyarch clearly hears the noise. Players have voiced concerns about timings, unpredictability, and the impact doors have on flow and rhythm in tight matches.

Here’s what Treyarch is doing in response to player input:

  • Some automatic doors will now remain open from the start of a match.
  • Doors will stay open longer before closing.
  • The activation distance for doors to open when approached is being increased.
  • Players can still shoot doors open manually.

Looking further ahead, Treyarch is exploring more options, like reducing the number of maps that feature automatic doors and even allowing competitive players to toggle the feature off entirely in Private Matches. Neat, right?

Weapon XP and Loadout progression getting a boost

Let’s be honest: grinding Weapon XP during a short beta window can be tedious, especially when you’re trying to test attachments and give meaningful feedback. Treyarch gets that, which is why they’re ramping up XP gains across the board. An update planned for this weekend will increase Weapon XP rates, helping you unlock gear quicker and experience more of the beta’s customisation systems.

Not only that, but Overclock earn rates (resources used to supercharge certain Loadout items and Scorestreaks) will also see a bump, so you won’t need to sweat as much to get your hands on the more powerful toys.

Spawns and Scorestreak controversy

Spawn logic tweaks are also coming, addressing early complaints about inconsistent or unsafe respawn locations. Treyarch didn’t go deep into specifics, but assured that better spawn behaviour is being implemented across several maps and game modes this weekend.

However, one thing that’s not changing — at least not yet — is the ultra-powerful Gravemaker scorestreak. This controversial streak allows players to see through walls and obliterate enemies with a one-shot blast. Some players want it nerfed, while others argue it should stay beefy, given its high score requirement. For now, Treyarch is keeping it as-is for the rest of the beta testing window.

Bug Fixes and UI Upgrades

The most recent patch also includes a range of backend improvements. Highlights from the Day 2 patch include:

  • Fixing a Steam issue that caused social menus to close when players were “set to away.”
  • Eliminating errors while navigating menu tabs or logging in.
  • Improved stability tied to player loadouts, Tracker Perk, Drone Pod, Pinpoint Grenade, and Skewer Scorestreak.
