Battlefield 6 destruction explained: Why you can’t flatten every building

Battlefield 6 is bringing the explosive chaos you’d expect, complete with crumbling buildings, tank-blasted walls, and massive environmental destruction. But if you’ve been diving into the beta recently, you’ve probably noticed something a little off, or rather, a little too intact. Not everything blows up. Some buildings and structures just won’t budge, no matter how much lead you pump into them. And there’s a reason for that.

Why Battlefield 6 doesn’t let you wipe the map clean

Yes, the destruction is back. Battlefield’s trademark environmental damage lets you cave in roofs, punch holes through concrete, and flatten entire sections of urban sprawl. But as you might have seen in the beta, not every structure is fair game. Some elements — like the towering smokestacks — refuse to fall, and that choice isn’t accidental.

During a post-playtest AMA attended by Dexerto, the devs got real about why full destruction isn’t part of the plan. Simply put, it’s a mix of gameplay balance and player orientation.

“We don’t want you getting lost in rubble”

Design Director Shashank Uchil tackled the question head-on: “We want to make sure we don’t lose important landmarks on the level which helps player orientation,” he explained. In other words, while unleashing mayhem is fun, completely levelling the place could make navigation a nightmare.

Kevin ‘T0TALfps’ Johnson, the game’s Community Manager, added to this: “Each map often comes with their own identities and also POI points. These buildings are usually protected from heavy degradation so we can ensure players are able to spot and orientate themselves on the map with ease.”

So yes, some buildings are bulletproof — not because of realism or tech limitations — but because it’s just more playable that way. Think of them like lighthouses in a storm of chaos. Without them, every corner would look like the last war-torn building you ran through.

What’s new with destruction in Battlefield 6?

It’s not like the devs are scaling back destruction. If anything, the Operation Firestorm map is amped up in the chaos department, just reined in strategically. Maps Producer Claire Bromley shed some light on the improvements, explaining that the team “worked on upgrading the destruction and explosions across the map.”

And here’s a cool touch: in the centre of those massive chimneys is a button — yeah, a button — that fires a huge plume of flame straight up. Perfect for roasting those snipers who think they own that perch.

“All the various silos and gas tanks explode across the map, causing destruction,” Bromley said. “As well as improved destruction across the level, especially on all the buildings.”

Controlled chaos: The method behind the dadness

So while you won’t be flattening the entire cityscape, there’s still plenty to decimate — and strategically so. Battlefield 6 aims to strike a careful balance between environmental warfare and keeping the map readable. It’s about making every scrap of destruction matter, while ensuring you don’t get turned around in your own collapsed base.

Honestly, it makes sense. Complete freedom to destroy might sound like a good idea: until you’re bricked in and can’t figure out where you are. With this approach, it sounds like DICE is making sure the destruction serves the gameplay, not just spectacle.

Battlefield 6 is set to launch on October 10, and Operation Firestorm is already shaping up as one of its most intense experiences, even if you can’t drop a chimney stack on your enemies … yet.
