Battlefield 6 on Xbox Series S optimisation made the entire game better, says dev

When you think of current-gen consoles, the Xbox Series S often feels like the underdog. It’s smaller, less powerful, and generally requires extra elbow grease from developers to hit those same targets as its beefier siblings. But according to Christian Buhl, technical director on Battlefield 6, developing for the Series S wasn’t just a challenge: it was a catalyst for major upgrades across the entire game.

The Xbox Series S Battlefield 6 roadblock that sparked a breakthrough

In an interview with Kotaku, Buhl opened up about early development hurdles that came from optimising Battlefield 6 for the Xbox Series S. The issue? Crashing levels caused by memory constraints.

“Xbox Series S does have less memory than even our mid-spec PC,” Buhl explained. “There was a point … Oh, I want to say, like, 6 to 12 months ago where we kind of realized that a lot of our levels were crashing on Xbox Series S.”

Resolving these crashing issues wasn’t quick or simple. It took “a month or two”, during which time the team conducted extensive playtesting and data collection. But here’s the kicker: all that hard work didn’t just make things smoother on the Series S. It made everything better.

How Series S testing boosted performance across all platforms

Buhl said that once developers began pushing all of their levels through stress testing on the Series S, they uncovered performance issues that weren’t previously apparent. By solving them and stabilising memory usage, they improved stability, performance, and optimisation across multiple platforms, not just Microsoft’s budget box.

This cross-platform ripple effect is particularly impressive when you think about how chaotic Battlefield matches can be. Large-scale destruction, dozens of players interacting, vehicles flying every which way. Keeping that experience seamless on every platform is no small feat, and the Series S served as the proving ground.

So, where did all that optimisation land them? A smooth 1080p/60FPS experience on Xbox Series S, according to Buhl. That’s a major win considering the system’s reputation for being the bottleneck in cross-platform development.

Meanwhile, Series X and PS5 players will enjoy multiple performance modes — likely including 4K and high frame rate options — but it’s encouraging to see Battlefield 6 performing admirably across the board. For a franchise that’s occasionally stumbled out of the gate (yes, we’re looking at you, Battlefield 2042), this is a refreshing change of pace.

Sometimes, constraints aren’t a bad thing

It’s a bit poetic, isn’t it? A lower-powered console forced a AAA development studio to look deeper, work harder, and, in doing so, deliver a better product on every platform. In a genre that lives and dies by performance and fluidity, that kind of attention to detail could be what edges Battlefield 6 ahead of the pack.

So if you’re playing on Xbox Series S and worried about being shortchanged: don’t be. You’re not just playing a great version of the game. You helped make it better for everyone.
