Battlefield 6 Portal leak shows only up-style custom map creation

A fresh Battlefield 6 Portal leak has surfaced, offering an extended look at just what’s possible with the shooter’s highly anticipated sandbox mode. The footage, shared by Battlefield Wire on X, showcases nearly six minutes of gameplay that feels like a surprising crossover between the upcoming FPS and viral indie sensation Only Up.

Custom creations are already pushing the boundaries

In the leaked footage, a player navigates a towering, sky-high structure painstakingly built through the Battlefield 6 Portal tools. The climb is tense and precarious, with each wrong step potentially sending the player plummeting to their death. It’s a far cry from the large-scale warfare Battlefield is known for, but that’s exactly the point: Portal is designed to throw out the rulebook and let players create their own spin on chaos.

The climb-and-survive mini-game instantly draws comparisons to Only Up, the breakout indie adventure where players scale an almost endless vertical course. Seeing this recreated in Battlefield’s engine already speaks volumes about the flexibility Portal is bringing to the table.

Why Portal might be Battlefield’s secret weapon

Players got their first proper taste of Portal during the multiplayer reveal, where DICE and Ripple Effect confirmed that the mode won’t just let gamers tweak variables and switch weapons between eras. Instead, they’re gaining the ability to actually customize maps, opening the door to full-blown game modes, mini-games, and entirely new ways to experience Battlefield.

If this all sounds familiar, that’s because it is. Halo fans will remember the groundbreaking Forge mode, which kept players creating, sharing, and competing for years. In fact, players responding to the Portal leak were quick to draw comparisons to Forge, and honestly, the similarities are impossible to ignore. If Portal manages to capture even a portion of that staying power, Battlefield 6 could have legs far beyond its traditional post-launch roadmap.

The road to launch

With Battlefield 6 set to launch on October 10, these glimpses behind the curtain are arriving at the most exciting time. The recent open beta gave players the chance to stress-test the core multiplayer, feeding back valuable insights to the developers. Meanwhile, the ongoing Battlefield Labs sessions seem to be generating frequent leaks like this one, teasing how ambitious the Portal mode might really be.

It’s worth acknowledging, though, that too many spoilers can sap some of the magic. Part of what made Forge so special in Halo was discovering the weird, wonderful, and sometimes chaotic creations the community put together for the first time. The same could be true here for Portal — and while leaks are certainly fun, the best might be yet to come once the full game (and full editor tools) are in players’ hands.

Every time a new Battlefield entry rolls around, expectations soar. The scale, the destruction, the spectacle — it’s the series’ trademark. But Portal is the ace up Battlefield 6’s sleeve. A whimsical, customisable toolset that may just elevate the community into co-creators. After seeing a full-on Only Up-inspired obstacle course inside this FPS juggernaut, the possibilities look endless. October 10 can’t come soon enough.
