GTA 6 Delay update: Take-Two CEO “very confident” in May 2026 release indow

It’s fair to say we’re standing on the edge of gaming history. Grand Theft Auto 6 isn’t just another sequel: it’s a cultural moment more than a decade in the making. And after years of radio silence, cryptic leaks, and feverish speculation, Rockstar Games finally pulled the curtain back in December 2023. The hype? Off the charts. But as development inches forward and fans keep their expectations (cautiously) high, the elephant in the room remains: Will GTA 6 go through a delay again?

Where things stand: A short timeline

Originally slated for a 2025 release, GTA 6 was officially bumped back to May 26, 2026 earlier this year. Like many major AAA developments, especially for a game of this magnitude, delays are part of the process. Rockstar attributed the delay to the need for additional refinement, which honestly, with the studio’s track record, is really not surprising. After all, Red Dead Redemption 2 was also delayed and turned out to be a generational masterpiece.

The first reveal trailer showcased dual protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, and teased the return of Vice City, the series’ neon-lit, crime-fueled stand-in for Miami. The state of Leonida will play host to sprawling urban chaos and tropical danger like never before.

Strauss Zelnick is feeling “very, very confident”

This week, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed concerns about another delay during a financial update, and his verdict came with a fair amount of optimism. Speaking to The Shortcut, Zelnick said his “level of conviction is very, very high” that GTA 6 will launch in May of 2026 as scheduled.

“We try not to pump expectations,” Zelnick added. “Rockstar’s whole stock and trade is to have these extraordinary expectations and still beat them. I know it’s going to be an amazing game.”

That doesn’t mean the team is coasting. Zelnick emphasized the importance of finishing strong: “While I couldn’t be more optimistic than I am, all of us have to do the work. We have to deliver something great to consumers and then the consumers are going to tell us just how great it is.”

Console release first, PC version later

As with previous Rockstar titles, GTA 6 is expected to follow a staggered release plan. The game will initially launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a PC release likely to follow at a later date. It’s a familiar strategy, seen with both GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, ensuring the game runs at peak stability before hitting the broader PC market.

Should fans still be worried?

Let’s be real: until the words “Gold Master” hit Rockstar’s servers, fans will remain cautious. Development delays can happen for any number of reasons, especially when dealing with open-world behemoths like GTA that push technical and creative boundaries. But given Zelnick’s visible confidence and Rockstar’s usual polish, there’s reason to be hopeful rather than worried.

So, if you’ve been staring at that calendar, dreading the idea of yet another delay? Take a deep breath. At this stage, all signs suggest that May 26, 2026 is the date to circle — and hold onto — until we hear otherwise.
