In what could be one of the boldest pivots for one of gaming’s most iconic shooter franchises, Electronic Arts reportedly has big plans brewing for Battlefield. According to gaming industry analyst Michael Pachter, EA is eyeing a future where Battlefield becomes an annual release — much like its longtime rival, Call of Duty.

EA’s ambitious Battlefield strategy
During a recent episode of his Pachter Factor video, Michael Pachter claimed to have spoken directly with Byron Beede, the General Manager of the Battlefield franchise. Based on their conversation, Pachter says Beede shared EA’s long-term goal for the franchise: to transform Battlefield into an annual series by setting up a multi-studio development system.
“The goal is to have three studios working on Battlefield in a three-year development cycle,” Pachter explains. “Each studio would release a game every three years, which would allow EA to launch a new Battlefield title annually.”
While this model mirrors Activision’s successful Call of Duty format — where studios like Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer Games rotate releases — Pachter notes that EA is still five to six years away from making this a reality.
Battlefield’s current state: A new era on the horizon?
All signs point to EA taking Battlefield seriously again. Battlefield 6 is already a massive collaboration between DICE, Motive, Ripple Effect Studios, and Criterion. With four major EA studios joining forces, many fans see this as a turning point after the rocky launch of Battlefield 2042.
This multi-studio support could be EA testing the waters for a broader development infrastructure, the first step toward that annual release plan. But while EA is laying the groundwork, not everyone is sold on the idea of Battlefield becoming a yearly affair.

Would annual releases hurt Battlefield?
Honestly, this is where things get murky. The idea of a new Battlefield every year sounds great on paper — constant content, non-stop action, and continued engagement. But Battlefield isn’t Call of Duty. Where CoD thrives on twitch-fast gunfights and spectacle-packed campaigns, Battlefield’s DNA is built around massive scale, sandbox chaos, and intricate team play.
Jumping into an annual format could compromise that balance, especially if the quality dips or the innovation slows. Right now, the franchise needs to win players back, not oversaturate the market.
One thing’s for sure: not every annual release would necessarily mean a brand-new, fully-featured title. “Could I see Battlefield releasing a new experience annually?” Pachter muses. “Possibly — but not a new, full-fledged game.” That leaves room for interpretations, expansions, seasonal reimaginings, and maybe even experimental modes.
What could “new experiences” look like?
Let’s get a little speculative, because why not?
Post-Battle Royale, the multiplayer landscape is hungry for the next big mode. Could Battlefield bring back or reinvent modes fans have begged for for years? Dinosaur mode, anyone? It’s been a running meme in the community for over a decade, but honestly, with Ripple Effect’s history of creative experiments (looking at you, Portal mode), the idea doesn’t seem too far-fetched anymore.

Not official … yet
It’s important to note that while Pachter claims this info came directly from Beede, it hasn’t been officially confirmed by EA.
Battlefield’s future may remain uncertain — but it’s clear EA has plans to make it a centrepiece of its portfolio once again. Whether that’s a revival of its glory days or a risky overreach remains to be seen.
