You know that cluttered mess of game demos, expired betas, and random trials you’ve collected over the years on your Xbox? Good news — Microsoft is doing something about it. A brand-new feature called “Free with Xbox” is arriving in the Xbox ecosystem, and it’s a total game-changer for organising your digital library.

Say goodbye to demo overload
If you’ve been gaming on Xbox for a while, chances are you’ve built up a graveyard of old betas, time-limited trials, and free demos. These often sit mixed in with your full games under the My Games & Apps section, making it frustrating to find the stuff you actually still want to play. Honestly, who wants to scroll past that one Crackdown 3 demo they tried for five minutes back in 2018?
Well, Xbox knows the struggle, and they’re doing something about it. As part of a recent update available to Alpha Skip-Ahead Xbox Insiders, users will now see a new section under the Full Library tab called “Free with Xbox.”
What goes into ‘Free with Xbox’
This isn’t just a cosmetic change. The “Free with Xbox” category does some heavy lifting behind the scenes by relocating all previously downloaded:
- Demos
- Free game trials
- Outdated or expired beta versions
All of these now show up here instead of under your owned games. That means your core library gets a nice spring cleaning — no more wading through outdated files that can’t even be launched anymore.
A small tweak with a big impact
It might sound like a minor quality-of-life change, but for anyone who’s been using Xbox for years and collecting content along the way, this is a breath of fresh air. It declutters your main game list, keeps important content front and centre, and pushes nostalgia-worthy but often useless bits of software to their own special place.
Plus, this is clearly Xbox continuing down its path of library fine-tuning. With Game Pass constantly expanding and backwards compatibility still a fan-favourite feature, this kind of update just makes navigating your library feel smarter and more intuitive.
Who gets it first?
Right now, the update is only available to Alpha Skip-Ahead users, a select group of Xbox Insiders who get access to early development builds of the Xbox OS. That might sound exclusive, but don’t worry — most Insiders features like this usually roll out to the public within a few weeks once they’ve been properly tested.
So if you’re not seeing the change yet, it’s coming. And soon.
If you want to see the feature in action, Tom Warren shared a quick preview on Twitter.
Cleaning up digital clutter, one demo at a time
Digital libraries are the new bookshelves, and let’s be real, nobody wants their collection filled with empty boxes and old junk that doesn’t even load. This new “Free with Xbox” category is Xbox’s way of applying Marie Kondo logic to your games list: If it doesn’t spark joy … or even load … it’s off to a separate folder.
Stay tuned for the wider rollout, and in the meantime, maybe hold off on deleting any old trials — they’re about to have a new home.
