Overwatch 2 temporarily removes Midtown Map after game-breaking bug

Overwatch 2 players looking to queue into the bustling streets of Midtown might notice something missing this week. Blizzard has temporarily removed the fan-favorite Hybrid map from both Competitive and Unranked modes, following the discovery of a major graphical issue tied to lower graphics settings.

What’s going on with Midtown?

The issue started shortly after Overwatch 2’s mid-Season 17 update, when players began reporting a bizarre bug: parked vehicles on Midtown weren’t showing up, but only for those playing on lower graphical settings. These invisible cars could throw off gameplay and positioning, making Midtown unexpectedly perilous, and potentially giving players with higher-end machines a distinct visual advantage.

Blizzard responded swiftly, disabling the map from active rotation while they work on a fix. Currently, there’s no official ETA on Midtown’s return, which means players will have to wait patiently — or reluctantly — until the issue is resolved.

Midtown: A NYC brawler with a history

Introduced alongside the release of Overwatch 2 in 2022, Midtown brings inspiration from the subway-screeching, neon-soaked heart of New York City. It’s a Hybrid map, meaning teams first battle over a capture point before pushing a payload through tight, urban corridors lined with alleyways and building flanks. The map is popular for its clear-cut sight lines and its absence of cheap environmental kills, a rare thing in Overwatch 2’s pool.

Midtown was also a visual centrepiece during Overwatch 2’s Pride Month event back in June, donning rainbow-coded banners and elements that celebrated the LGBTQ+ community..

Not Midtown’s first time in the repair shop

This isn’t the first time Midtown’s been pulled off the server rack. Back in Season 6, another unnamed critical issue sidelined the map for the majority of the season. It’s clear that while Midtown is a creative and gritty battleground, it’s also becoming a bit of a technical headache.

The fact that both issues — the current vehicle bug and the Season 6 disruption — followed shortly after the removal of Pride Month assets has raised some eyebrows in the community, although Blizzard hasn’t confirmed any correlation between seasonal map art and these errors.

If you’re bummed about Midtown’s absence, here’s a silver lining: Suravasa and New Junk City have both received major reworks in the same mid-Season 17 patch. These updates include major visual touch-ups, improved field-of-view options, and loosened chokepoints, providing more balanced opportunities for both attackers and defenders.

And let’s not forget the Aatlis map saga earlier this season. After its Flashpoint debut in Season 17, Aatlis remained unavailable in 6v6 games for over a month due to technical issues. That one eventually returned after the midsummer patch, so we may be looking at a similar timeline for Midtown, unless a hotfix arrives first.

When will Midtown return?

As of now, Blizzard’s tight-lipped about when Midtown could make its comeback. Based on recent patterns, it might not be back until Season 18 or possibly even later. For now, players should prepare to adapt their map pool expectations and keep an eye on upcoming patch notes or hotfix updates.

Until then, consider it a forced vacation from New York City’s chaos, and a chance to enjoy some of the more polished areas of the Overwatch 2 world.
