Call of Duty fans demand return of ‘War’ mode in Black Ops 7

With Black Ops 7 quietly heating up anticipation ahead of its expected release later this year, longtime Call of Duty fans are hoping, some even praying, that one beloved mode makes a triumphant comeback: War mode.

The structured, objective-based chaos of War mode first captured players back in Call of Duty: WWII, delivering a cinematic, team-driven PvP experience. It later returned in a lighter form in Modern Warfare III, where its reception was mixed: loved for its promise, but criticised for its lack of content and dedicated maps.

What made War mode so good?

In WWII, War mode stood out with its uniquely tailored missions. Players had to progress through linear objectives like building a bridge, escorting a tank, or storming a bunker with a real sense of purpose. It was immersive, cooperative, and, critically, built on maps specifically designed for the mode’s epic scale and pacing.

But as the series evolved, the practicality of designing expansive custom maps for a single mode became a sore spot. Developers faced tough decisions: build one big War map, or construct several smaller multiplayer maps that could serve multiple modes?

In Modern Warfare III, Activision opted for a compromise. War maps like Operation Spearhead were stitched together from existing multiplayer arenas, including classics like Khandor Hideout from Modern Warfare 2019 and the legendary Crossfire and Countdown maps from COD 4 and Modern Warfare Remastered. While functional, the recycled design lacked the tightly crafted narrative arcs that War mode was known for in WWII.

The Ground War connection

Some fans point to Ground War — the large-scale PvP battleground — as a kindred spirit to War mode. It’s sprawling, sandbox-like, and gives players space to flex different playstyles casually. And honestly? When it works, it feels like Battlefield-lite… in a good way.

Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare 2019 executed Ground War with finesse, but MWIII struggled to replicate that magic. The experience felt more chaotic than strategic, missing the scripted flow that made its predecessor feel like a cinematic campaign, just with real players in place of AI enemies.

The real issue: layoffs and lost visions

So why isn’t War mode a staple now? One possible reason may be tied to a real-world shakeup: the January 2024 layoffs at Sledgehammer Games. As part of a massive corporate restructure under Microsoft, many of the developers behind War and Ground War were suddenly let go.

Many fans speculate that more content was planned, potentially new War mode missions, but the vision was abruptly halted by those layoffs. If true, it’s a sobering reminder of how development shakeups can kill momentum for creative and unique features.

Could War mode return in Black Ops 7?

Honestly, it’s a long shot. War mode demands custom assets and tailored mission design, a heavy commitment in an industry where studios are increasingly recycling maps and content to meet tight annual schedules. Unless developer Treyarch decides to innovate and take that risk, the mode might remain a nostalgic gem buried in WWII’s legacy.

That said, there’s still hope. If enough demand builds, and chatter in the Reddit threads and fan communities is any indication, Activision might reconsider. A hybrid solution, like MWIII’s modular War maps, could offer a compromise. But for true fans? That scripted, narrative-style War mode is the dream.

Let’s be real…

At the end of the day, players want a slate of modes that…

  • Encourage teamwork without forcing a meta
  • Feel immersive without becoming scripted railroads
  • Offer chaos, but with purpose

And maybe, just maybe, a game that dials back on the over-the-top cosmetics and goofy crossovers. Some fans are calling it the “Beavis & Butthead problem”, with the tone of Call of Duty increasingly feeling more like a parody than a grounded shooter. Whether Black Ops 7 follows WWII’s legacy or not, here’s hoping it finds some balance.

For now, fire up WWII if you’ve got the itch. War mode there still holds up today. And who knows, maybe Black Ops 7 will deliver the comeback we’ve all been waiting for.
