I finally jumped on the media streaming service bandwagon when I saw an offer on the Optus page for a free 3 month trial with Stan. I used Stan for a month and enjoyed some series like under the Dome but was a little disappointed about missing out on shows like DareDevil, Jessica Jones and all the ones related to it so I hopped over to Netflix and started up on their 1 month Trial. Stan is only 10 bucks a month and Netflix is 12 for the HD pack and two devices playing simultaneously pack but I feel like there’s a lot more variety on Netflix with Stan just scraping it with more movie options.

Looks like I will drop Stan after the trial is over because both myself and my misses are liking what is on Netflix. Just wish  one of these services would also show up to date seasons of shows like The Flash, Arrow and other TV shows.

A few goodies to watch that you prob would just skip over…

          • Shameless
          • Weeds
          • Jane the Virgin (Stupid but sucks you in)
          • Vikings
          • Daredevil
          • Jessica Jones
          • And one of my personal favs… Freeks and Geek (see where Rogan and Franco first began) oh and it has Valma and Marshall too :P Sadly it was cut after the first season

Also went and watched the full series of House, which I would never have bothered with, if it wasnt for Netflix

Had Stan for the trial months, and liked it, but just couldn’t warrant having the two going at once. But am thinking of dropping Netflix so I can start with all 15 seasons of the original CSI on Stan…

Hearty +1s for Shameless, Freaks and Geeks and the Marvel stuff.

Upper Middle Bogan was better than I thought it would be.

Suits, Marco Polo, Continuum, and other things I can’t remember while I’m walking.

We chop and change through them. Get Netflix for a couple of months when a new show or series gets added we want to see, for eg my wife will get it again when OITNB new season is out and I’ll grab it if and when a new Knights of Sidonia comes out. We had Presto for a while but I didn’t use it much, as tempting as all of the X-files, Buffy etc was I just didn’t get time to watch them with all the new shows I am trying to keep up with.

ATM we have Stan, which is great for Dr Who and my daughter watches Degrassi. I am interested in the Wolf Creek series when that starts, but I was a huge fan of the movies, just wanted to see where they take it. I wouldn’t sign up just for it but if my subscription is still active I’ll give it a watch.

I think Stan is great value at the moment for $10/month for everything, I do think Netflix has more on it though. Looking at trying Hulu next, my wife loves the Teen Mom series and there is alot of that on there, which you can’t get anywhere else (not including Foxtel because they show a few episodes at a time and you can choose when to watch them mostly because only the last 3 or so eps are in the anytime catch up, so no good to her

Stan is grossly underrated. Better than Oz Netflix atm.

Hulu has a lot of great shows. Also has Seinfeld if that’s your thing.

That is on Stan as well. I might have to hurry up and watch it all before I cancel my subscription.

I never even looked at Presto, barely know anything about it.

I know Stan has a lot of content on there but but there’s just not enough on there I really like to keep me coming back. If I had money to burn I would get both but at the end of the day I will have to settle for the one service. I could just go back to pirating the shows but I’m trying to do the right thing just wish we had one really good service that lumps all these services together. It’s crap that you need to fork out for more than one service just to cover all the shows you like. Starting to get a little messy now and almost feels like my gaming PC having to run 3 different services just to get all the games I want.

If you feel that way about Stan, you’ll probably feel the same about Netflix and Hulu. I mean, there’s *more* there, but it’s really just more of the same.

Anyone tried the Apple TV? My wife was at a friends house last week and said she had it. Sounds like a decent option, 8 a month and you search for what you want on your phone and it instantly starts streaming on the tv. Sound pretty good. I guess the only downfall is the outlay for the Apple TV box

What are they paying $8 a month for?

Apple TV is a decent option but personally I hate the UI. I prefer Chrome Cast but the UI might not be as accessible.

It’s a good option if you if you don’t have a gaming console but you can easily set up streaming from your PC, Xbox One or PS4. Xbox One also has Smart Glass which lets you do the same thing (search on your phone). I also have Chrome Remote Play so I can control my iMac from my phone and watching Netflix, Hulu etc. without having to get out of bed.

Yeah not sure, this is second hand info from my wife… but she said it’s $8/month to access shows, movies and music. Im guessing, it uses iTunes???

Netflix finally blocking other regions has soured me a little. To the point I cancelled in rage (and I had to get Stan for Better Call Saul which I had been watching on UK Netflix).

Stan is surprisingly good. I’d say it actually has more stuff I want to watch than Netflix AU, but I can’t leave Netflix since I want it for the originals. So I decided to keep both, but cancel Hulu instead, since most of what I watch on there is also on Stan, and they’ve been a bit sloppy of late — stuff that used to be on Hulu a day after airing in the US is now being added 3-4 weeks later, and there’s a much faster way to get it if they’re going to play that game…

For $22 a month total, I think Netflix AU + Stan actually has a lot of what I want to watch, even without access to real Netflix anymore.

This is also on Stan (actually a cheaper way to get it than Hulu, and is up only a couple of hours later). Good show, even though Franco phones in his performance towards the end.

My Netflix and Hulu still work with Unotelly.

11.23.63 was great at the start but dragged on. Could have certainly been 2-3 episodes shorter considering how it ended.

If you didn’t really care about spending a bit of money each month I bet things would start getting a little messy having 3 or more services running. Having said that you would more than likely end up with more available content gathering all these streaming services than what you would get with a Foxtel package I guess.

Well I pay around $30 a month for all these ervices and definitely get more out of it than I would with Foxtel.

Although I don’t have AFL and I have to go out to watch it, where I spend like $40-$50 a week so yeah maybe I should get Foxtel lol

The way I see it (simply because things are pretty tight right now) spending $11.99 a month for the 2 screens HD plan seems like a decent investment especially since there’s 2 of us enjoying the service. Probably wouldn’t hurt to spend another $10 for Stan as well but I do see it getting forgotten for the majority of the time so I might as well bin it if it’s not getting used as much. The truth is if I get desperate for a show I want I can find it “elsewhere”. For what you get for 12 bucks I’m happy spending that money even in the tightest of times, that’s hours of entertainment on multiple devices that doesn’t cost me anything else apart form the services I’m already paying for.

I think if another service came along that wasn’t trying to do the same thing as Netflix, Stan etc and had a different focus and specialised in that then that’s probably going to be my compliment service to go with Netflix.

Yeah, $12 for that much entertainment is pretty inexpensive. You always need entertainment, even when things get tough. It should be factored into a budget, even if it’s not much. There should be something there. You need separation from work and pleasure.

$12 a month for ebtettainment is nothing compared with going out. I know I can get stuff via other means but the convenience of having it there at the click of a button is worth it.

Sadly the only thing I want to watch at the moment is original CSI. It is only available on stan, I cant even get the full series through… Other ways.

But my wife thinks two streming services is too much and wont let me get stan back…. Yep Im whipped 😜

If you really want to tightass it, split it with someone else. Since Netflix is 2 screens simultaneously ($12) and Stan is 3 ($10), you can have different households watching them at the same time, with different profiles. I gave my sister access to my Stan account, and since I rage quitted Netflix, she gave me her log in with my own profile. So now we both have Netflix and Stan, but only pay for 1 each, and live in different places, and still use them as if we both had our own accounts.

                                              Maximum frugal :p

Anyone use the Windows app to run Netflix? I totally forgot about there being a dedicated app to run this so I downloaded it the other day and only just started using it now on my main PC.

Guess it’s not too much of a difference from running a separate window with Netflix running but thought I would give it a go for a while anyway.

Finally started the second season of Daredevil…..

Has anyone used Presto? I see there is a free 30 day trial, just wondering if its any better than netflix or stan

We had Presto for nearly a year with a heap of free trial codes. It’s not bad but it depends what you want to watch. They have more or less the same movies but they have alot of Australian TV shows which my wife watched, all of All Saints, Always Greener, I think Winners and Losers, those kinds of shows.

I also has some stuff like Parks and Recreation, Bates Motel and All of Buffy, Angel and The X-Files

It wasn’t bad, but they put a device limit so you can only register so many devices which made using the chromecast hard because both that and the device you were using to cast to it had to be registered separately and counted as your 2 streams, so if you were using it nobody else could watch on anything else. I hear they upped the device limit to 6 recently to combat the chromecast issue but as far as I know it still counts as 2 streams

Ok thanks… I just had a look, and it’s $14.99 as month, or $9.99 for TV only and $9.99 for Movies only WTF. Might jsut stick with Netflix.

Started watching the last Kingdom last night. Although it seems decent. It doesn’t stand up against Vikings, and because both shows sharing some Settings and characters. I think it’s a bit confusing, because I am comparing it too much to Vikings.
